An old woman sits down in a chair,
staring from her apartment window.
Remembering younger days,
watching the children below.
With so much energy to move about,
they run up and down the stairs without hardly a thought.
Back and forth,
and up and down they go.
Screaming, laughing and jumping,
putting on their youthful show.
The old woman smiles as she takes in this joyous sight,
watching their performance well into night.
The old woman stands up and slowly crosses the room,
ready to sleep, she heads off to bed.
Her muscles are sore and her body it aches,
but youthful thoughts and times fill her head.
She dreams all night long of children's play,
going up and down, and running and laughing all day.

by Carol Gioia

and hopelessly glum,
can't see the forest for the trees,
walking around
with a horrible frown,
nothing in life
