I have been relatively faithfully watching American Idol for three years now. But I'm not as addicted as some. I've never seen every episode of the auditions, the semi-finals or finals. But I do have favorites and follow their careers whether they win or not.
Each year I ask myself: "Do I want to watch this show?" What I saw last year rather bothered me with the judges putting my favorite and others down just because they didn't want them in the competition. I wanted to smack the judges through my TV set. I was glad my favorite didn't make it to the finals! Who are they to judge talent they don't have? Anyway, the judges are only giving their opinion; when it comes to music people have their own favorites and taste.
I've asked myself a few times: "Should I be watching a show where people are being insulted for the sake of entertainment, even when they know what they are getting into? The music industry, of course, is a lot tougher than facing a few judge's stabs.
But this year, I've not wanted to watch American Idol. It's weird. Usually if I watch the auditions and see someone I like, I watch the whole season (unless my favorite leaves.) But that won't be the case this year. I won't be watching as much. I want to be "Idol" free. I want my life back! It can be addicting. This show can remove you from reality, if you're not careful. It can also bring out the worst in man (check out some of the forums!)
Being "Idol" free, always makes me feel better; more in touch with reality, more alive. Not to mention not "chatting" so much with other fans on time-consuming forums.
I've loved some of talent on this show, but after so many seasons you have to decide how much time you're going to put into it.
It crossed my mind I could be doing something else tonight besides watching Idol (like writing this article) or reading a novel.
I can find out about the show on the WEB, in the newspapers or TV. My local Fox station does a virtual recap after the show is over! They do an "Idol" related story just about every night-talk about hooked!
