Venturing into uncharted waters, Coraline isn't what you would expect from a PG rated cartoon film. In fact, almost every aspect about the film is imaginative and innovative. Tim Burton, the director, is one of the most creative and intriguing current directors. He focuses on a somewhat dark storyline with Coraline. The story will keep your eyes glued to the television, and even though it can be somewhat creepy for younger audiences, many viewers will be able to enjoy it. Even though it is a cartoon, it has a certain style to it that makes it unique.
The movie stars Dakota Fanning as Coraline Jones, Teri Hatcher as Mel Jones / The Other Mother, Jennifer Saunders as Miss April Spink, Dawn French as Miss Miriam Forcible, Keith David as The Cat, John Hodgman as Charlie Jones, Robert Bailey Jr. as Wyborne, and Ian McShane as Mr. Sergei Alexander Bobinsky. Of course, since it is a cartoon, the actors' voices were only used. Each actor added to the entire feel of the movie.
The plot follows Coraline Jones, a young and troubled girl. Her family, consisting of her and her parents, recently moved into a large and mysterious house. They share the house with neighbors that appear to them to be somewhat insane. Coraline is troubled because her parents don't pay attention to her, and her life is completely void of joy. However, everything in her life changes when she finds a small door in one of the rooms.
When Coraline entered the door, she was greeted to a surreal world, similar to her own, just everything was better. She had parents that paid attention to her, with buttons for eyes. The world around her was filled with joy; everything Coraline wanted with her life. However, she soon learned that everything is not alright in this parallel world. Little by little, she learns that the other world is hiding a menacing doom, and she will do whatever it takes to fight for her freedom.
In all, Coraline is a highly entertaining movie. What is appealing to most viewers is the fact that it ventured into new territory. Many of the current films on the market begin to blend into one another. However, Coraline is definitely an imaginative and unique movie. For a PG movie, it could be disturbing for younger viewers, as it is dark-themed. Overall, Coraline is a creative movie that will most likely entertain its viewers, no matter the age.
