There are many factors that can cause sleep deprivation. Stress, diet, substance abuse, no exercise, environment, etc. Stress can be a huge factor in sleep deprivation. When a person has alot on the mind, it is easy to forget that you have to relax a little bit to become comfortable. Some deep relaxation techniques can often help. Try laying down taling some deep breaths and give yourself a sort of mental massage. Start with the eyes, move over the temples and face, and then slowly go down the rest of your body. Feel yourself just letting go.
Diet can also be a big contributor. What you eat will have an influence on how you feel in general. Some foods high in carbs or sugar can make it hard for your mind and body to relax. Food and drink high in caffiene can stay in your system for as long as 6-8 hours, making it hard to sleep.
If you drink or smoke or use drugs, legal or otherwise, these can make it incredibly hard to fall asleep. Alcahol can inhibit your ability to fall into an R.E.M. sleep, which is the deepest form of sleep. Cigarettes contain nicotine which is a stimulant, so having that smoke right before bed is not a good idea. Many drugs, especially illegal drugs, will stimulate your body and manipulate essential chemicals in your brain to the point that falling asleep is nearly impossible. Deep meditation can sometimes help.
If you have a very inactive day, you may have an active night. Get some exercise during the day and you might have an easier time at night.
The environment you are in might not let you fall asleep. Many experts believe that light, even a little bit, will make it harder for your brain to realize that it is time to sleep. If you can eliminate the light, noise, and distractions around you then you may become tired a little easier.
Otherwise just relax, try to stick to a routine, and don't wait until you think you're tired. You probably already are.
