Tomatoes

The Tomato, a fruit or a vegetable? Nobody knows. The poor tomato has the characteristics of being a fruit but I've never seen anyone spread it on their toast or add it to their cereal. Defined in the American Heritage Dictionary as, "A fleshy, smoothed-skinned reddish fruit, eaten as a vegetable." Who wants to eat something that doesn't even know what it is? Take a walk down a grocery aisle and see for yourself. Tomato sauce can be found in the pasta row with the vegetables; while tomatoes stewed, chopped, or crushed is with the canned fruit two aisles down. Even fresh tomatoes are not lined up next to the fruit in the produce section. Instead, you will find this poor fruit next to the garlic because the garlic is known for its uplifting, healing powers. It is time we act like the garlic and give the tomato a break by just calling it a vegetable. Acceptance is so important.
