Tips for lowering your summer energy bill

We all know how uncomfortable we get when the temperature goes up. Those energy bills can get so high that we are afraid to cool  ourselves off. So we suffer to save money. Well instead of sweating it, just try these tips to lower your energy bill this summer.

First thing, if you do have central air be sure to have it inspected by a professional before summer. Change filters often and have your ducts cleaned. Duct cleaning is worth the expense for summer and winter. You would not believe the things that can trap cool or warm air from flowing to each room.

Thermostats should be turned up when you're not at home but not too high. Keep your thermostat set a little higher than you would keep it when you are at home otherwise it will take forever to cool down the house. Always check the weather forecast because the weather changes and you may not even need the air on. This could save you lots. If you have children I would install a lock box to prevent them from cranking the air up. It could be a beautiful day and instead of opening some windows they will turn the air on.

Adjust vents in rooms. Close vents and doors to the rooms you don't use. For a smaller room you can open the vent a little. For larger rooms open all the way.

Window unit air conditioners can be used to lower your summer energy bill as long as you follow these tips. Use energy efficient air conditioners with an adjustable thermostat.  This allows you to set the temperature so that the unit will turn off automatically when it reaches that temperature. Keep filters clean and make sure there are no openings around the unit.  Once you find a good setting that is comfortable then keep it there.

Fans can be a big help in cooling your home. When using fans correctly they will remove humidity and circulate the air in the home. They can bring cool air in and push warm air out.  The ceiling fan can help in all seasons because in the winter months it pushes warm air down. Oscillating fans will help to circulate the air, box fans are great for pushing hot humid air out and bringing cool air in. Fans will also help push the cool air from air conditioners into other rooms.

Windows that allow too much sun in will raise your energy bill.  If you have windows that let too much sun try hanging darkening blinds or drapes. This will help cool the room down. For windows that are not being used or are in need of repair you should cover them with plastic. Don't forget to check weatherstripping on the bottom of doors. Having worn or torn weatherstripping will let cool air outside.

Installing vinyl siding will reduce your energy bill by insulating it. Planting trees for shade will also aid in cooling your home. As for some easy ways to reduce your bill just refrain from using the oven, prepare cool meals or barbecue outside. If the temperature is really high, take the family to a cool place like a library, mall, movie theater or the lake. It is always cooler by the lake.
