Being a sci-fi fan, I have often wondered why I never started to watch Battlestar Galactica (the new incarnation) before now when it's into Season 3.
Did I not like the story? No, that's not it.
Did I not like the actors in the show? Definitely not.
Then what was it?
It was the most banal of reasons: it conflicted with another show I already watched. Yes, when Battlestar Galactica came onto the schedule here in Canada, I couldn't fit it into my rotation because of another show. Now, I don't recall what that show was anymore, but the fact remains, I did not watch.
Until now.
A friend of mine finally managed to convince me to watch, so off I trotted to the video store and I rented all the discs they had. And proceeded to watch it all over the course of several weeks (thankfully they abolished late fees, otherwise I might as well have bought the discs to save myself some cash!). And I must say, I'm impressed. The stories are intriguing, the characters are wonderfully flawed, and for once, the future isn't as antiseptic as it's usually portrayed.
While I don't always enjoy the character exposition, or stand-alone, episodes, I realize they're integral to the story and character development, especially in Season 3. Viewers need to see how the characters are dealing with the whole situation of the attempted genocide of their race by the Cylons, and the escape across the universe. It's a tense and stressful situation indeed.
I look forward to seeing Season 4, which I believe is being filmed this summer (2007).
