Why distance learning requires you to be self-motivated

Distance learning can be an ideal option for those who have difficulty in physically getting to the college of their choice. You are able to study at home, yet still have access to the material and the assistance that you need, albeit remotely. However, distance learning does require you to be self-motivated, and this is where some people struggle. Here are some reasons why you need to be self-motivated.

*No structure

If you are attending classes at a particular time, the chances are that you will quickly fall into a routine, which will help you to ensure that you are studying on a regular basis. If you can study any time, you may find yourself putting things off, thinking that you can do it later. The best thing to do is to avoid getting in this position in the first place, by setting yourself a strict timetable. Ideally, you should get up in the morning and start studying straight away; then you are less likely to put it off.

*Other responsibilities

The chances are that you have chosen distance learning because you have responsibilities that preclude you from going to college. You are probably hoping that you will be able to fit your studying in around your other responsibilities. However, there are bound to be times that your everyday life gets in the way of your studying and, if you aren't motivated enough, your work will end up at the bottom of a long list of things to do.

*No one to push you

If you're going in to college on a regular basis, you will be constantly coming across classmates and tutors with whom you will discuss the course, thus firing up your own enthusiasm for your work. If you find it helpful, you can get together with classmates to study. If, however, you're studying on your own at home, you might feel like not bothering, especially if you are having a bad day, or you have come across a problem. Having someone to push you is much easier than having to push yourself.

*Distractions

People have a habit of being easily distracted, especially when they are doing something that they don't really want to do. If you're studying at home, then even the television can be a distraction. Plus, if friends and family know that you are at home, they may decide to pop round or phone you, thinking that you won't mind. If you find it a welcome distraction, then your studying could be put off for another day, and the longer you leave it, the more self-motivated you will need to be.

*Lack of guidance

One of the most frustrating things about long-distance learning is that when you come across a problem, you don't have someone immediately to hand to help you out. You should, of course, have a tutor, and there may be a forum where you can discuss issues, but it isn't the same as having someone that you know personally to give you guidance. If you're the sort of person that needs a lot of guidance, then distance learning may not be the best option for you.

You know yourself better than anyone else. If you are a determined, strong-willed person, who doesn't need a lot of guidance when studying, then there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't do well from distance learning. Otherwise, you may need to consider your options carefully.
