Halloween brings back memories of pumpkins, goblins, ghosts and witches, anything scary. The month of October was a brisk and frosty month, when chimneys were filled with smoke, and it was necessary to bundle up. Everyone had jack-o-lanterns displayed in their windows. We enjoyed the costumes we made at home, but we mostly looked forward to trick or treating. We decorated our paper bags and went cruising throughout the neighborhood. Ten o’clock was our bewitching hour, and we returned home with full brimming bags of candy. “I got some dollar bills!” exclaimed my brother with excitement.
There was one dangerous looking house in the nicer part of town where the houses were humongous. It was known as the “haunted house.” No one bothered to go there except on Halloween. One particular year when I was about twelve, a small group of us decided to pay a visit. It too was gigantic, but it was dilapidated and run down from neglect. Timidly we entered into the eerie house. It was dark, but with the incandescent full moon, there were illuminating shadows cast about. It was thrilling and allowed our imaginations to work overtime. A couple of the kids were equally as scared as me, and they started howling. “Ooowww! Ooowww!” could be heard to enhance the atmosphere. There were many
