In a world in which there are so many people, so many races and so many cultures it is difficult to find something that many of us have in common.Yet, there is one thing. Fat. That excess blubber that seems to cripple us all at one point or another in life. The word fat has become such a nuisance, in fact, that remedies are being thought of almost on a daily basis to limit its stranglehold on society. There are low fat products and countless advertisements that push programs such as Nutrisystem while assuring a near perfect success rate. However, if these programs truly were successful, than the problem of obesity would not exist today.
The fact is that simply following programs such as Nutrisystem will not alleviate obesity by itself. Sure, eating smaller or healthier meals, something such weight loss programs advocate, does not hurt. However, to truly lose weight, and keep it off, takes more than a temporary diet. It takes a lifestyle change.
A common misconception among individuals attempting to lose weight is that going without eating or eating very little for a few days will magically erase several pounds. Such a strategy will never lead to weight loss, and in fact may lead to weight gain, as hunger will always prevail. Thus, the overall point of dieting should not be to stop eating, but instead eat healthier. For example, before eating a doughnut, eat an apple or other fruit.
Another important thing to keep in mind before beginning any diet is to recognize that optimal results will not be achieved overnight. Losing weight takes a lot of time, a lot of effort and a lot of discipline. Expecting to lose significant pounds within a week of beginning a weight loss program, for example, will only lead to failure in the end as such results will not be achieved.
Now if a person should not go without food or expect to lose several pounds overnight, what should they do? Well, beyond eating healthier a person should strive to become physically active. Many people may frown upon such a challenge due to a lack of time. However, it does not necessarily take several hours a day to become physically active. Simply spending a half an hour a day riding a bike, jogging or doing a few sit-ups will go a long way.
In the end, losing weight is neither easy nor impossible. However, it does take a committed and continuing effort.
