How music can affect your pet's mood

Music is truly, the universal language.  From human beings to fish, music has the ability to calm, soothe and alter the mood of just about any living being, no matter what category.  I have seen it in my own pets reactions and behavior when they hear music.

Given that other animals are more sensitive to sounds than human beings, you wouldn’t think that they would react so positively to music, but indeed they do.

There are two cats at my house, two beautiful and loving beings that I would not take a billion dollars for.  They don’t always get along, but the one thing that they have in common that never has failed to calm their irritable moods and squabbles is music.

It’s nothing around my house to launch into a family version of, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, in order to calm the cats.  They react immediately by snapping to attention, then rubbing their heads all over us and finally lying down to hear the rest of the song.  It never fails to stop a squabble, soothe them during a frighteningly loud display of fireworks or any other loud event that may be taking place which terrifies them.

I have one cat that is partial to, “Willie Nelson”, while they both love the music of the, “Celtic Women” and “Enya”.  It’s nothing to find them lying near the stereo whenever music is playing, seemingly fast asleep, with both ears standing straight up, listening to their favorite songs and instrumentals.

One of my last dogs was partial to anything by, “Reba McEntire”, while a previous cat reveled in the beat of the, “Stray Cat Strut”, performed by, none other than the group, “Stray Cats”.  I don’t recall having a pet that didn’t like music or wasn’t calmed by some genre of music.

Both of my cats love to hear the guitar.  They will lie beside of me for hours on end when I play, but they both hate the harmonica and disappear whenever it’s played.

Statistics of many controlled experiments have actually shown to not only calm animals, but plant life, as well.  Classical music has been played in the laboratories of the world for everything from flowers and vegetables to lobsters and chimps with the same, similar results.  It calms then down, soothes them and relieves stress and tension that can have a healing effect on all individuals of various species, have their favorite classical pieces.

However, some
