Career growth is what every employee dreams of. Not every employee knows how to accomplish that goal though, that is why most make serious mistakes that end up costing them their jobs, or throw in the towel before they even try at all. To achieve career growth, it is necessary to formulate a good action plan and follow it to a tee.
Strategic planning for career growth
1. Go the extra mile
An employee who simply does what is asked from him, has little to zero chances of getting a promotion and a raise. To reach new heights in the business field, what you need to do is show willingness to go the extra mile. Take on more tasks than the ones you are asked for. Make suggestions and offer alternatives. Participate in company presentations and be the first to help out colleagues even when they do not ask you for it. Going the extra mile will put you above the competition and therefore will increase your chances for career growth.
2. Broaden your horizons
An advanced degree can give you an edge that other employees do not have. It can make you stand out from the crowd and increase your chances of getting a promotion and a raise. A Master's degree or a Phd can be proven to be extremely helpful. If that is not possible, opt at least for an online degree. Attend as many seminars and conferences as possible to expand your knowledge in your field. Knowing more than the average employee can put you first on the list.
3. Network
The more you expand your network, the more chances you have of meeting business people, grab new business opportunities or land new, better jobs. Also, you can ensure that you will be asked in an interview first, or at least, before several others. Knowing the right people can open many doors that in turn can help you reach new heights. Public relations are extremely important when you are looking for professional growth. In order to be succesful, you need to be polite, disctreet, patient and persistent. Always carry your business cards with you to hand over to anyone who might be interested. Be careful though not to be too pushy, otherwise you will drive others away. Also, do not seem too needy, as this will send the message that you are desperate and willing to go to any lengths to get what you want.
Career growth requires strategic planning, self discipline, patience and persistence. Practice makes perfect, so do not expect too much too soon. One step at a time will lead you to the desired results.
