Route 66 offers great reflections of the past when you camp along this historic route.The fact is, campers still have plenty of places to stop along the original Mother Road to enjoy remnants of years gone by. To begin with, if your travels start in Illinois, here are some great places you may want to stop and check out for camping.
If your first stop is in Illinois, here are some great place to stop and camp.
• The Fossil Rock Recreation Area in Wilmington, Illinois, is equipped with full hook-ups, showers, fishing, fossil hunting, volleyball, basketball, and horse shoe pits.
• Lazy Days campground in Litchfield, Illinois, offers a friendly, family atmosphere with low-cost camping, along with full-hook ups, fishing and swimming at the lake, playground, hot showers, and even a convenience store.
Missouri features many camping sites that can make your journey along Route 66 more enjoyable.
• Meramec State Park in Sullivan, Missouri is one of the most spacious campsites featuring camping, caving, fishing and dining. Beautiful landscape surrounds the park, with the sounds of the Meramec River flowing freely alongside.
• Bennett Springs State park in Lebanon, Missouri actually has five campgrounds all equipped with the basics, showers, laundry, dump stations, and electric, sewer, and water capabilities.
Kansas might hold the perfect spot to camp when you check out all the camping places that are along Route 66
• Riverfront Park Campground in Leavenworth, Kansas features numerous amenities from trails, playgrounds, and tennis courts, to horseshoe, volleyball, and basketball courts. There's something to please everyone.
• Flagstop Campground in Milford, Kansas offers full hook-ups, full service cabins and kitchenettes. You can also enjoy the beautiful sand beach and some primitive camping areas surrounded by numerous trees.
Once you reach Oklahoma, you'll find these places will be great to stop and camp.
• Route 66 RV Park in Sapulpa, Oklahoma is right on Route 66, close to Tulsa. This park has 34 sites with full hook-up, showers, and laundry facilities. There is also one apartment available.
• Elk Run RV Park in Elk City has a lot to offer campers with fishing swimming, and even playing golf.
