How to protect your garden from insects

Unwanted or invasive insects can be a common problem for many gardeners. While it is difficult to eliminate every harmful insect in the garden there are ways to reduce the population of invasive insects.  Reduce unwanted insects and enjoy a lush, colorful and healthy garden with these simple and quick tips.

Incorporate Native Plants
There are many plants that are naturally resistant to the feeding habits of insects. Certain varieties of plants, especially native plants, demonstrate a higher level of resistance to specific species of insects. Native plants have the tendency to reduce the impacts of invasive insect by their natural biological characteristics. This includes a waxy leaf surface or tiny leaf hair which aid in preventing an insect from feeding on it. Plants also have the ability to emit various natural repellents to deter and repel feeding insects.



Attract Birds
Attract birds in your garden by strategically placing a birdbath or water source in the garden. Bird feeders as well as a variety of trees, shrubs and flowers will also attract birds to your garden.

Encourage Beneficial Insects
While some insects are considered pests in the garden other are considered beneficial. Insects play a fundamental role in the life cycle of plants by consuming harmful pests and pollinating flowers. In fact, the number of beneficial insects in a garden usually far outweighs the number of harmful insects.

Encourage ladybugs in the garden by planting nectar-producing and sweet smelling flowers. Ladybugs play a positive role in the growth; development and sustainability of numerous species of flowers. Not only are they beautiful to look at but they also aid in controlling the pest population by feeding on aphids, bugs, insects, insect eggs and spider mite.

Spiders are also a major predator of insects and will quickly and effectively control the insect problem in any garden. . Provide a layer of mulch or grass clippings over the soil in your garden to encourage spiders to take up residence in your garden.

Other beneficial insects include dragonflies, bumble bees, ground beetles, spiders and centipedes.

Use Natural Plant Sprays
There are many natural and home made spray remedies that can be used to prevent insects from taking up residence in your garden. From garlic sprays to pepper dusts there are numerous concoctions that when made properly can repel the most diligent of insects. Specific sprays can be used to repel certain insects. Keep in mind the types of plants that are in your garden as well as the species of insect or bug that you are trying to repel. The internet is a great source for researching various sprays and home made recipes for bug and insect repellents.

With a little research and some strategic planning your garden can remain a hardy and healthy plant paradise for years to come.
