Actor Kevin Costner may be in front of his most important audience yet, but the critics are already in support of his latest venture to help clean-up the oil spill.  ‘After $20,000,000 of his own money, and 15 years of scientific innovation having gone into the technology, BP has finally decided to make Costner’s “dream” a star’ (White, 2010).

‘BP has requested 32 of the centrifugal devices designed by Kevin Costner’s partnered company Oceans Therapy Solutions’ (BBC News, 2010).  The device known as the V20, “can separate 210,000 gallons of oily water a day”’(Jones, 2010).  ‘The device, without using “chemical or biological agents,” can achieve a purity ratio of 99/100 percent’ (BBC News, 2010).  ‘Costner’s filtration methods utilize centrifuges that intake a combination of oil and water and then spins at high speeds to separate the mixture, releasing the water and containing the oil’ (Edwards, 2010).  ‘Within 60 days, most of the requested centrifuges will be deploying along the Louisiana shoreline that stretches “120 miles (193 km)” setting 50 miles from the “heart of the spill” (Johnson, 2010).

‘With the current methods in place, sources say the skimming boats are actually only picking up 10/100 parts oil as compared to water that is then sent to a barge.  The barge then must return to shore after reaching capacity payload’ (CNN, 2010).  ‘Theoretical estimates depending on the source suggest “20,000 to 40,000” barrels a day are still escaping the Deepwater Horizon Well. At 42 gallons per barrel, estimates suggest 1,680,000 gallons of oil is spilling each day.  At its current levels, “8” V20 filtration machines would have to be deployed to handle the daily volume, not included in this estimate is the oil already spilled and hitting shorelines’ (Moylan, 2010).

‘In wake of this dramatic incident, Costner went on to say that the device should be attained beforehand, metaphorically like a “fire extinguisher,” should another incident like the current oil spill ever take place’ (Sanner, 2010).  Should Costner’s device work, he can put hero down on his resume, and not just in the movies, but of the eco-system of this planet.  For he will be remembered in History books as the Lone Ranger whom rode in on
