Simple ways to develop new online content

by Paul Rance

Created on: June 26, 2010

The internet is a big plus for writers, as it's easy to get published. There are many ways a writer can use the internet to develop new content, as well as promoting themselves at the same time.

Blogging

Having a blog is both an easy and free way for getting one's writing online, and a good way of showing off various content. The content can be anything from a lengthy article to a haiku, and if you've got lot of material, or can write a lot of material, you can put items up regularly - which will mean that people will also be more inclined to visit your blog regularly - if the work is well-written and interesting. Blogger is one respected blog site you could use.

Domain Name and Website

A writer should also consider getting their own domain name and website. Not only because it gives a writer a certain prestige, but you can also use it as a way of networking, by exchanging links and info with other writers. You may also hear from publishers who are keen for some publicity, so you can see how a writer with a website can not only use it for their own work, but attract a circle of people who could ultimately benefit the writer, too. Do shop around, when considering setting up your own website. Prices can vary a great deal, and consider carefully how much web space you will need. Less space will cut down costs.

Having one's website is not difficult to arrange, though some writers will rather use other, simpler ways if they are not comfortable with web design, or can't afford to have a website designed for them. But having a website makes it as easy as blogging to put up new work consistently.

Audio and Video

If you are not shy about reading your work - extracts of stories, poetry, etc., then you could make either audio or video content, and post them on other free sites such as MySpace, or, if video only, on YouTube.

Positive feedback to your material will normally act as a spur for producing more and more new material, though you should be careful to remain meticulous about the work you produce. If more and more people are paying attention to your writing, you don't really want people to quickly lose interest.

Very imaginative writers even use Twitter, despite its restrictive 140 characters, to put up extracts of prose, Tweet by Tweet, and Twitter is also made for the haiku! The net is still young, and it'll continue to be a diverse and exciting way for writers to get exposure, so try and make make full use of its potential.
