The history of you
is in your hands
and what you made with them
(or neglected to make).
Were you a poet or painter or entertainer?
Did you stroke a loved ones' hair when they were sleeping?
Did you catch that big fish that we still remember?
Did you sew that hem, fix that squeak,
smooth away a shuddering dream?
Do you also remember all those loves
that slipped through your fingers
all the chances you did not take?
Do those lost memories make you ache
with uncompromising sadness?
My hands
have inked the last i,
crossed the last t,
and with them
I am buying my freedom
from your tyranny.
