Encourage your children to go green!

Getting the kids to take a healthy interest in saving the planet, being economically friendly and also be green can be some hard tasks especially when you are not really sure to begin as a parent. Sure, we all want to do our bit for the planet but in reality, many of us do not do enough. Thankfully, with the up and coming school holidays, here are a few ways you can encourage your children to be more eco-friendly and not drive you around the bend at the same time!

In the lead up to the school holidays, why not buy compost bins or a wormery to keep the kids entertained for hours on end? Not only that but it gets them away from their permanent spots in front of the TV and gives them a chance to enjoy nature at its best. Kids love bugs and creepy crawlies so by investing in a wormery, you can get rid of some of your household waste easily and without hassle while teaching your kids how to be green. You can get a wormery for a fairly cheap price especially if you look on online auction sites and not only that, you can either buy specific tiger worms for your new worm-wonderland or even grab a few from your back yard once it has stopped raining. Your household food waste such as fruit and potato peelings as well as leftovers can be added to your rich compost mix in the wormery itself showing kids exactly how nature works and being eco-friendly at the same time.

Compost bins work in exactly the same way – they attract all sorts of nature and wildlife, some of which may not be great but it still teaches kids the importance of the wildlife around them and nature as well as giving you a place to get rid of your household waste and back yard grass and flower cuttings. All of these things can be started for a low price and enjoyed for many years to come.

Of course, you can go one step further than this and teach your darling children how to become self-sufficient at the same time as being friendly to the environment. Why not get yourself a few ceramic plant pots, get some seeds and start planting foods that your children can watch grow. Runner beans, potatoes, tomatoes, strawberries and practically anything else you can think of can be grown in even the smallest of back yards and you can reap the benefits by eating them, knowing that you have saved money and reduced food packaging.

There are plenty of ways that you can keep your children entertained during the school breaks while teaching them to be eco-friendly and the earlier you start with your kids, the more of an impact you can have of the environment. Why not try and introduce some sort of eco-friendly plan to their school and get the entire class involved? Every little thing makes a difference and then you can say that you are doing your bit for the environment!
