American Idol can more or less be thought of as an updated version of Star Search. The show is without question one of the most watched on American television. Since its inception in 2001, millions have tuned in every Tuesday and Wednesday between January and May. So just how and why has this program become so popular? What is it about American Idol that fascinates so many viewers?
For starters, it’s a reality show, and for whatever reason, this type of programming has really caught on with television audiences. Put simply, it’s fun to watch previously unknown individuals with singing talent be discovered by big names in the music business. If not for this show, and despite fierce competition, these contestants would otherwise never realize their dream of becoming a professional singer. Even the runner-ups have the potential for a bright and lucrative career which would simply be impossible if not for those responsible for creating this program.
Sadly, we all know it’s true, but it’s also very entertaining to watch and listen to those who are; shall we say, less gifted. Come on. Admit it. It’s hilarious when somebody butchers a popular tune by either having a dreadful voice, singing off key, or worse yet, both. If you don’t believe this, YouTube.com has dozens of video clips solely dedicated to the program’s worst auditions. It’s better yet when the rejected contestant pleads his or her case and insists that the judges don’t know what they’re talking about. In all honesty, Simon Cowell in particular has significantly contributed to the show’s entertainment value by being brutally candid with his assessments. Unfortunately, Cowell will not be returning for the 2011 season, and it is thus questionable how successful American Idol will be unless his successor proves to be equally ruthless and direct.
Moreover, American Idol can be compared to a sporting event of sorts. Once the competition has been narrowed down to the final 12, those of us at home become attached to a favorite. Like an NFL football team or Major League baseball club, we root for our contestant. We breathe a collective sigh of relief when Ryan Seacrest announces that he or she is “safe’ for another week. Conversely, we are shocked when our preferred singer ends up in the "Bottom 3," and angered when they are sent packing.
With that said, one still cannot help but wonder about the sincerity of the voting just prior to that final night. For the past two seasons, runner-ups Adam Lambert and Crystal Bowersox should have been the clear winners by a landslide.
As for Season 10? We’ll have to wait and see what lies ahead.
