Demon’s Souls is a PS3 exclusive action-RPG from a developer called From Software. They’re known for their Armored Core series of games and also King’s Field. They also made Enchanted Arms, which was another RPG. However, it wasn’t too good. With that said, it’s a pleasure to say that Demon’s Souls is a really good game. It’s not for everyone though and this is mostly because of the game’s punishing level of difficulty. If you’ve been following the game, you’re more than likely aware that the game is hard.
So, let’s start with the game’s story. In the game, you’re cast as an adventurer either seeking to save the land of Boletaria (a continent/country in a larger world) or to accrue power for yourself. Boletaria itself is cut off from the outside world thanks to a fog that’s been brought about by the ruler who called forth a demon. The fog/demon also drew many demons to the land of Boletaria and there are now hardly any living people. However, word got out to other lands about it and so you essentially play a foreigner. After an encounter with a nasty foe, you’re sent to the Nexus which is essentially a location that serves as a bridge between the living and the one’s waiting to pass on. From there, you’re in soul form until you can kill a powerful demon to get back your body. And this leads onto the gameplay, but first, the story is something you need to go looking for at the end of the day. There aren’t many cutscenes etc.
So, regarding the soul aspect of the game and the whole ‘get your body back’ thing, it’s tied into the gameplay. Firstly, souls are your currency for everything. They enable you to level up and they are also used for purchases, upgrading equipment and repairing it. Now, when you die, you lose all of your souls. However, you’re given a chance to get them back and to do so, you need to run back to your blood stain. There is one caveat though: all of the enemies will have respawned. In addition, if you previously had your body, you’ll be in soul form. This gives you less health than you’d have in body form. If you die again, your souls are permanently lost and you’ll have a new blood stain. Also, to get your body back, you have to use a rare item or kill one of the bosses. To top it off, the game is unforgiving in that one mistake can cost you dearly even against regular enemies. It’s a game
