Short stories: Finding yourself

by Crystal Patterson

Created on: June 24, 2010

Amy lived a life full of trials and tribulations.  From the very start she was abandoned in a dumpster.  That was her welcome to the world.  She was an unwanted burden to someone or some animal to do such a thing to another life.  A cold night she was found lying in a heap of damp papers from the chinease restaraunt.  After fighting for her life in the hospital she was quickly adopted.

It would seem her luck was about to change except for the fact her adopted father was a violent alcoholic.  The adopted mother was nice at times but, very quiet and tempermental.  Amy felt no love.  She only knew chaos in her life.  The father would awaken her at night throughout the years molesting her.  She lived in pain in silence and shame.  She was afraid if she spoke against what was happening to her then she'd be abandoned again.

Throughout the years Amy decided enough was enough.  At 16 she left with just a back pack of her clothes.  She hit he streets.  By day she went to the mall to wash up.  She went behind the mall to eat what was thrown out.  By night she slept in fear of all the city noises in a nasty abandoned building.  Amy did aot of thinking those scarey nights awake by  the dogs howling in the city alleys.  She kept a journal of all her thought and feelings.  She began to dare to dream of her aspirations in life.  There had to be something more than darkness and filth.

Amy signed up for a pell grant for cosmotology classes.  She began attending.  She was determined to get herself off the streets.  There she met the janitor, Jim.  He was very nice to her.  He began to walk her to her classes.  He was not rich but who was she to complain she was still homeless.  He was nice and gentle.  For the first time in her life she felt loved.  She cried as she had experienced her first kiss.  Jim was madly in love and months later proposed.  She agreed to marry him and she earned her degree.  Amy got a business loan and opened her own shop.  She is no longer in the street with no hope.  She found herself through the worst of times.  Amy rejoices she has a future beyond what life handed her in the begginning.  She was and is no trash.  But, a gem in the rough. Now she sparkles her full potential.
