Tips for using Alexa to improve a website's traffic

Alexa.com is a website that provides information on other websites.  While other sources of information and statistics are present, Alexa primarily provides traffic-related information.  This information is beneficial to you, as you will be able to see how you stack up against competitors.  Additionally, should a competing website be bringing in more traffic, you will be able to analyze that traffic to see if, among other things, those visitors are in your target market, from what country they visited, and how long they stayed on the competitor’s website.

Alexa provides numerous types of information.  Traffic statistics, search analytics, audience, contact information for the website owners, user reviews, related links, clickstream, the number of websites linking in, and how long the website has been online are just some of the informational statistics you will receive from Alexa about a particular website.  Additionally, each of these primary information topics has several subtopics which provide greater information detail about a particular website.

There are many ways to use this information to increase your traffic.  If a competitor obtains more traffic than you, check the competitor’s “websites linking in” and see if your competitor’s links are from popular websites.  Additionally, see if the competitor has more “websites linking in.”  By checking this information you will know whether you need to improve the quantity, quality, or both of your inbound links.

The “audience” statistic is a great way to discover whether your marketing campaigns are working.  The “audience” statistic shows you the gender and country of location of the people viewing your website.  Additionally, these statistics show whether the majority of your page views come from people at work, at home, or elsewhere.  Finally, the “audience” feature breaks down your traffic even further by providing personal statistics on your “audience” (e.g., whether they have kids, age ranges, etc.).  By viewing this information, you will be able to see whether your advertising campaigns are actually reaching your target markets.  As such, you will be able to adjust your marketing efforts, as applicable, and increase the traffic to your website.

The “page views” and “search analytics” statistics are phenomenal because these statistics show you your website’s reach, your traffic rankings in various countries throughout the world, your websites traffic trend over set time periods, and which key words and phrases are utilized most to find your website.  These are vital statistics because they allow you to view the reach of your website, as well as help you establish better key words and/or better utilize your current key words.

Alexa.com provides all of this information and more.  Best of all, all of the information provided by Alexa is free.  Therefore, take advantage of this free information to improve your website traffic and thus, improve your Internet business.
