As a dog owner you yourself probably love your pooch. However, its also very important that as a dog-owner you realize that not all people love dogs and many are very afraid of them. While you may not agree with their fears please realize that they may have suffered some trauma due to a dog and it is very hard to over come a fear like that.
That does not, however, mean that you cannot entertain in your home. What you must do is take the proper steps so that your guests fell comfortable. Below are a few little tips that can help you and your dog deal with the fears of your guest.
1. Try To Introduce Your Pet: Is your pet well trained? Does he or she sit, stay and lie down upon command? If so then you may try to introduce your pet to your guest. Calmly explain to your guest that your dog is very well trained and that he or she has never and would never attack anyone. Then hand your guest a few treats to give to your dog. Remind him or her that the way to your dogs heart is through his stomach. If you pleasure his stomach then he will love you for ever.
2. Separate Your Dog: If your dog is not very well trained, then you need to separate him. Dogs who bark, jump, or are easily excited need to be separated from your guests until you have trained your dog thoroughly. This is because your guests may may injured or even more frightened by your dog and possibly refuse to come over again.
Before your guests arrive put him in the backyard or in a separate bedroom. Give him some attention for a few minutes so that he does not feel that he is being replaced. Then as your guests arrive, leave him with a bone and some toys then close the door and leave him be. If he starts to whine or bark do not yell or go to him. Just ignore him. He will settle down with his protests and focus his attention to something else.
3. Put Him In Day Care: If your dog does not calm down and continues to whine when you have guests then you may consider putting him in day care. Whether its with a doggie day care center, in the veterinary kennel or at the home of someone he trusts you may have to take your dog elsewhere during your party. This trick is best used for parties that are during the day, because you can easily go and pick up your dog before nightfall.
Regardless of what you choose to do with your dog, its important that you recognize both the needs of your dog and the needs of your guests. If you can acquaint them to each other with no problems then, that is definitely the preferred choice. If not you will have to do something with your dog when you have guests over.
