Controlling the AIDS epidemic in Africa

have been reported in industrialized countries, where tuberculosis had previously been virtually eliminated. (Mann 91-93) It is likely that, with the spread of HIV/AIDS, other antibiotic-resistant diseases will become more prevalent.

Many extended families in Africa don't have the means to care for increasing numbers of orphans, and this has led to an increase of children living on the street. These children are likely to drop out of school and continue the cycle of poverty, making HIV infection more likely and losing any chance of a better future. (McGeary 12-13) In some areas of Africa, the increase in orphans has been as high as 50%. (Mann 278)

The world today is more susceptible to the spread of disease than ever before. "Perhaps the most important lesson to be learned from the age of AIDS is the message of global interdependence. For we can no longer believe that our borders will protect us; the health of the world is bound together." (Leone 16) It is clear that for the future of Africa and the world as a whole, efforts to control the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa must be strengthened immediately.
