Poetry: Long drive home

by Darlene J. Coomes

Created on: June 21, 2010

The golden glow of sunset covers all the earth.

The sun’s a raging fire with a massive blazing girth.

It’s made the road I travel a yellow path of light,

Winding to the sun as it sinks into the night.

Each friendly car that passes on the left and on the right,

Soon will be dark shadows and strangers in the night.

We’re traveling down the road toward the final blazing glory,

And when the night is come, who’ll be left to tell the story?

Perhaps it’s those traveling in the opposite direction,

Heading into darkness is the route of their selection.

Do all the paths we follow end in darkness as some say,

Or is there a path to a better, brighter day?

Our lives are like these highways traveled at high speed.

The signs say laws enforced but there are few who choose to heed.

So we hurry on our way down the path that we each choose.

Thinking life’s a game and one that we won’t lose.
