For people who have not had the opportunity to go to England and the real thing in English Fish and Chips from one of the street vendors or little fish and chips cafes where the fish and chips are wrapped in newspaper and you put real malt vinegar on them, GB Fish and Chips is about as close as you will come in the US or at least in Denver. They are really good and authentic. I will never forget when we were in the shipyards in Chatham England in 1967, we found a little shop a few blocks from where we were in the yard thathad the best fish and chips I have ever tasted then or now. We used to go over there every night. I can't even imagine how many orders of Fish and Chips he sold to the crew of the USS Robert K Huntington DD781 those three weeks. They were hot, fresh, and absolutely delicious. GB Fish and Chips is close.
GB Fish and Chips started out with a restaurant on South Broadway in Englewood and now have opened a second one just a few blocks north of where we live on North Sheridan across from Sloan's Lake in Edgewater. This is much more convenient for us to go to once in a while.
GB Fish and Chips has a much braoder and diverse menu and has many different kinds of seafood. They call their seafood selections Swimmers. They have Half dinners fish only, half dinners, full dinners just fish or full meals. You have you choice of cod, tilapia, prawns, oysters, squid, scallops, or a combination platter that includes 1 cod, 1 tilapia, 1 prawn, 1 squid, and 2 scallops which are $7.65,$10.15,$14.25 or $16.75. The cod is outstanding. $8.75 for three pieces, a side and a soft drink, $11.75 for six pieces or$14.55 for six pieces, a side and a soft drink. The prawns re very good and run from $7.65 to $16.75. I have only had the oysters one time and was very disappointed in them. They were way overcooked and I thought pretty over priced but I will try them again one of these days cause I love oysters.. They are $7.95 for five oysters, $10.45 for 10 oysters and $17.85 for a full meal. I am not mush of a squid fan and have not tried it and probably won't. The scallops look good but I haven't had them.
The GB Fish and Chips menu also has four English Specialties that ae made from scratch in house each day. Bangers are spiced English Pork sausage and are very good. $5.95 ala carte or $8.45 for a meal. Their Shepperd's Pie is as good a any I have ever had but not my favorite.. GB's Pork Pie is excellent at $4.15 and $6.65. Pasties are a flaky dough filled with various meats and fruit fillings. Usually it is meat at GBs but I have seen them filled with various fruits for a tasty little dessert.
GB Fish and Chips is owned by a guy that is originall from England and he and his staff KNOW how to make good Fish and Chips. I could eat them at least three times a week.
