Self discipline is a vital skill to cultivate for any writer. If you work for a publication, rather than being freelance, it's learned more easily as it's kind of forced upon you, but if you are freelance you just have to grit your teeth and write... even if that's the last thing you want to do.

The need to earn money from your writing can be a great motivating factor, but perhaps more important than that is the desire to improve upon your work. One good way to increase the amount of self discipline you have is to keep all your writing, however new, old, good or bad it is. Over time you will see how you've improved, and this alone will give you the encouragement you need to discipline yourself to sit down every day and write something.

As with most things, regular activity brings rewards - and writing is no different.
