The past and future of the karaoke fad

by David Willis

Karaoke is not just something that you can rush in and do recklessly if you expect any degree of success. Of course, anyone can just grab a drink and get up on stage to belt out their favourite tune. But if you want to get the respect of the audience and continue to frequent a particular karaoke bar, you’ll need to keep etiquette in mind. Despite its wild appearance, there are definite unwritten rules that govern how you should conduct yourself when you get up on stage. By remembering these simple rules you will ensure that you and the audience will have the best time possible.

When you go to a karaoke bar, the way you conduct yourself in the audience is just as important as how you behave on stage. And sometimes how polite and respectful you are will matter much more than just your singing voice. So when you are in the crowd listening to other singers make sure that you pay attention and clap when appropriate. Remember that it’s not easy for everyone to get up and sing so you want to show your support and create a community atmosphere that adds to the room. So along these line never boo or laugh at people who aren’t doing all that well. You should keep your judgements in your own head no matter how tempting it is to laugh at someone who clearly has no singing ability. Keep in mind to treat others like how you want to be treated yourself, and you will surely appreciate it when they do the same for you.

If it is your first time singing then you should be careful with your song choice. You want to make a good first impression so stick with a song that you know well enough to sing in your sleep. Some people even go so far as to practice on a home karaoke machine before they decide to try it in public. As for which song to pick, you can always go with a classic, but keep in mind that many regulars will have heard most standards before. So you can give them a treat by trying something new and in that way you can put on a show everyone will appreciate. It’s probably best to stick with something people will recognize and stay clear from rap or hip hops songs.

In the end, your karaoke experience is what you make of it. So to capitalize on your chance to sing make sure to be appreciative and respectful. Remember, not everyone gets a chance to sing due to time restraints so don’t take your spot for granted. In time you will master the basics and sooner or later you will be a karaoke master in your own right.
