Poetry: Disillusionment

LAMENT OF A WOULD-BE HERO

I chased the dragons like they said
My lance lodged fast within his head
I saved the damsels in distress
For fair-lady many scars possess

Storybooks told me good would come
I believed them - guess I'm dumb?
A hero's path I sought to tread
And here lay I - mostly dead

Sacrifice - a noble word?
What a concept - how absurd
Better self-absorbed and cold
Then naively benevolent and bold

Yet, I wish with all my heart
That faerie-tales were true
To be summoned to a noble cause
I would rise up once again
Shake off all bitterness and pain
And ride swiftly to the fray
