PGA Tour schedule: July

by Richard Lloyd Evans

Created on: June 19, 2010   Last Updated: October 28, 2010

PGA Tour in July find PGA pros skittering around three countries, two continents, visiting the oldest tournament in the world before finishing at its newest.

July 01 - 04 AT&T National

TPC Deere Run, Silvis, Illinois
Purse: $6,200,000

2009 Winner – Tiger Woods $1,080,000

The National moves to the Aronimink GC, after having played its first three years in Maryland. The tournament began in 2007, with the first champions being K J Choi and Anthony Kim before Tiger Wood’s victory last year.

July 08 – 11 John Deere Classic

Augusta National GC, Augusta, Georgia
Purse: $4,400,000

2009 Winner – Steve Stricker $774,000

For the John Deere top players are off to Scotland for the British Open. The sponsors have been inviting female golfer Michelle Wie, and the attention has been fierce.

July 15 - 18 Reno-Tahoe Open

Montreux G&CC, Reno, Nevada
Purse: $3,500,000

2009 Winner John Rollins $540,000

This tourney merely has to compete with the British Open, but a lot of golfers who don’t go to Scotland compete for a chance for a title.

July 15 – 18 Open Championship

St. Andrews Links (Old Course), Fife, Scotland

Purse: $7,000,000

2009 Winner Stewart Cink $1,221,005

Nothing has more tradition than the British Open played at Golf Club of St Andrews. St Andrews itself is famous for its challenging bunkers and course layout. One oddity is that most holes have shared greens. Add in the brisk sea breeze, a rough of impenetrable Scottish gorse, dazzling competitions won by Palmer, Nicklaus, Jones and Woods, any wonder that this competition is always special?

July 22 – 25 Canadian Open

St. George's G&CC, Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada

Purse: $5,100,000

2009 Winner Nathan Green $918,000

First played in 1904, the Canadian Open rescheduled to July to attract more star golfers. This was highlighted in 2000, when Tiger Woods won the “Triple Open” of the British, American and Canadian Opens.

July 29 - Aug. 01 Greenbrier Classic

The Old White Course, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia

Purse: $6,000,000

Replacing the Buick Open, the Greenbrier Classic will be played on a Jack Nicklaus renovated course which has hosted both Solheim and Ryder Cup matches. It is only 7,000 yards Par 70, so accuracy is at a premium here.
