Novel excerpts: Grandparents

by Ryan Brenner

Created on: June 18, 2010

Synopsis:  This is an excerpt from a novel entitled Yard Work.  Cal has just one a big little league tournament game, and is going over to his grandparents to tell them all about.  He has an ulterior motive as well; he wants to see grandpa’s old photos.  He has seen another photo at another house, and he is convinced the mysterious person in each photo are some how connected.

CHAPTER 7

By the time we stopped at grandma and grandpas it was late in the afternoon.

“Well, hello there,” said Grandma who was sitting on her swing on the front porch, Grandpa was inside watching an old cowboy movie.  At least that’s what he said it looked more like he was sleeping.

“Did you have a game,” asked Grandpa sitting up on the couch, and trying to look more awake than he was.

“Yes, he did and tell them what you did,” mom said turning to me.

I took a few moments to tell how we had one the game, and how I had come up with the game winning hit.

“Wow, that’s good,” said grandma!

“Yeah,” said grandpa, he still seemed a little sleepy so I’m not sure he followed the whole story.

I sat down on the couch, but mom reminded me to sit on the edge, because my uniform was dirty and the couch was kind of new I guess.  I never got why adults said that when you were dirty.  It’s like its okay to dirty the edge of a new couch, but don’t dirty the back of it.

My parents and grandparents made small talk for awhile.  Apparently, one of grandma’s old school mates had died recently, and she was trying to convince my dad that he remembered them, but I don’t think he did.

After about a half hour in which I had picked up the TV remote and was flipping through the channels.

“Well,” grandma said, “It’s getting late I have frozen soup we could thaw that out for supper.”

Mom and dad decided that would be fine Brayton was at the Baltimore Orioles game with his friend, and they didn’t have anything else plan.  Grandma and mom went to get things ready, and a little later we were sitting down to eat.

When supper was done and the dishes were being cleared, and the talk had started again I saw my chance, “Hey grandpa, can I look at those old newspaper clipping you have.”

“Yes, I suppose that would be okay,” he said standing up.

“That’s okay I know where they are,”
