How to sleep comfortably on a hot night

Hot summer nights are great for barbecues or a stroll on the beach, but not so good when it comes to getting a sound night's sleep. It's a lot easier to get warm than to cool down, so how can you sleep comfortably in the heat of the summer?

Keep the room well ventilated during the day, so there's no build up of heat. Keeping the windows open at night may not be a viable option if you live in a hot country where there are mosquitoes and other flying pests. If that's the case, consider investing in a combined light fitting and ceiling fan. This serves twin purposes - the fan will cool the air without chilling you, as can happen with air conditioning. In addition, mosquitoes, moths and other flying insects will be deterred by the movement of the blades.

Use cotton bed linen, and dispense with all your fancy throws for the duration of the hot weather. Why not cover the bed with a pretty, empty duvet cover? The bed looks good during the day, and if the temperature drops during the night, this will probably be enough to cover you and keep your body at a comfortable temperature.

Do you really need that nightie or those pyjamas? Get naked in bed for a cool, comfortable sleep. If you have long hair, tie it back loosely, so that it doesn't make you sweat around the neck area. Some people suggest a cool shower before bed, but if it's really hot, the effort of showering and drying may make you hotter than ever. Instead, keep a packet of baby wipes in the fridge, and wipe yourself over with them just before you get into bed.

Another trick is to run your wrists under cold water. This will cool your whole body down. Have a cool, non- alcoholic drink just before bedtime, and keep a glass of iced water by the bed so you stay hydrated during the night. You may want to place one of those gel ice packs that physiotherapists use on sports injuries inside your pillowcase. Wrap it in a cotton tea towel first, so that it's not uncomfortably cold on your face and head.

It may be nice to cuddle up with your significant other, but in the heat of the summer, it's best to keep your distance if you want to keep your cool. Once you get overheated, it's difficult to cool down, so have a morning cuddle and then shower together afterwards. It's great fun!

Follow these simple tips for a good night's sleep on the hottest of August nights. Sweet dreams!
