Human beings; men and women are fragile cratures. Although evolution of our brain has greatly inceased our thinking capacity, a large part of our lives are still controlled by our emotions. There are very few people who are able to let their minds rule over their hearts; it takes too much discipline. Every person has basic emotional needs that has to be satisfied. And one of them is to feel loved. When we find someone like that in a relationship; someone who fulfills such a deep biological need, we get dependent on that feeling. When it breaks, the pain experienced is too much to bear. Time does heal all wounds but some, time can never fill.
1) You find yourself unable to throw away his gifts or anything belonging to him. Suppose you bought some groceries from a nearby shop, do you still keep the packet long after the food has been eaten? No. Because that had no significance to you, it was just a thing. However, if it was the same plastic that your ex had given you something in; the plastic has become more than a just a thing; it now has emotional meaning attached to it. Feeling any kind of attachment for his things signifies that he still has an emotional effect on you.
However, if there is no possibility of you getting back together with your ex, you are only setting yourself up for pain by clinging onto his things. Furthermore, you will be jeopardizing your future relationships. Even if you feel that you only want to keep his memories and nothing more, this will have an effect on your future relationships.
A love relationship with a man is an exclusive and intimate one where there is mutual trust and the belief that you belong to each other. Your future partners will not like you holding onto past baggage no matter how understanding they pretend to be. Thus if you really do hold onto a past memory, do so secretly and commit yourself fully to your current partner.
2) You are unable to see your ex with a new partner. If you are truly over your ex, there is no romantic feelings attached to them. Them having a new partner should seem just like let's say your brother or sister getting a new partner. However, human beings do have feelings and it is impossible to accept any of your exes preferring someone else to you even if you have gotten over him/her.
3) You find yourself imagining how things would be if he/she were here. You are at a great party, there are lots of wonderful single men and women out there. Someone cracks a funny joke and you find yourself wondering
