There is a general idea about a person who has an alcohol addiction. Often people refer to an alcoholic and don't have a positive image about that person. People often think of an alcoholic who someone who drinks all day and neglects himself. This often refers only to a small group of people who are addicted to alcohol.
Most of the group can be described as people who can not live without alcohol and daily struggle with the addictive effects of alcohol and all the consequences that entails. They function however still close to normal. They are often the people who say loudly that they are not an alcoholic. If someone goes beyond social drinking and becomes a problem drinker, the way back is very hard to find.
* Dependent on alcohol
When someone is addicted to alcohol it means that someone can't longer function normally without alcohol. It is therefore called an addiction. You can compare it to an smoking addiction. A moderate smoker can't even go a day without smoking, because his mind and body will react like feeling restless, tired and cranky. Alcohol effects the mind and body.
* Body
Alcohol affects the body. When someone is addicted to alcohol the body can't function without and if someone wants to stop he will suffer from withdrawal symptoms. Nausea, dizziness and fatigue occur when the body gets without alcohol. When someone is addicted it is not uncommon to wake up in middle of the night with the need to drink or getting up in the early morning. Someone who is addicted often feel nervous without alcohol. A true addict begins to shake with the absence of alcohol and only comes to rest after a glass of heavy alcohol.
* Psychic
Besides the physical effects of alcohol addiction there are psychological or spiritual implications or consequences. Someone who is addicted to alcohol can't function without alcohol. A addict does not feel comfortable without alcohol and tends to even get depressive. The person can't think of anything else than alcohol and goes pretty far in being able to drink. Think like putting vodka in a water bottle so somebody can drink at work. Never forget that an alcoholic in general is smart in concealing his or her addiction.
* The denial of the problem
Denial is often the first step for someone who is addicted. The person denies the problem and will try to prove by even stop drinking. But this is often short-lived and the person quickly grabs back the bottle. Often one will also go hide drinking.
* It's not as bad as you think.
