El Tejado is a very good family owned and operated Mexican restaurant that is located on South Broadway in Englewood, Colorado.. It has been in business long enough that the third generation of the family is now working and managing this great restaurant. They have the conventional TEX-MEX, Southwestern fare, but they also have more of the traditional dishes of Old Mexico. El Tejado is especially well know for their excellent fish and seafood dishes. They bake the whole fish with the head on so if that bothers you you might want to avoid that but it is really good. They have some good steaks and chicken dishes too.
El Tejado is open for breakfast, lunch ad dinner and I have eaten ter probably two dozen times over the last ten years and have NEVER had a bad meal. I have had breakfast when they first open in the morning and I have been there for dinner with family and friends and it is always good. Sometimes when they get really busy, they could use some more wait staff but they work hard and are attentive and do a good job,.
I am a breakfast person and although they have good pancakes and French Toast, you can get them anywhere. I wouldn't go to a Mexican restaurant for such fare. There are way too many other good things at El Tejado that you can't get at alot of other places. If I want pancakes, I'll go to IHOP. The El a breakfast menu offers 24 different items ranging from $3.75 for a short stack of pancakes to $7.75 for two excellent pork chops, two eggs, hash browns, and toast or two pancakes. They do a great job on the pork chops getting them done but not dried out. Fort a Mexican restaurant they have pretty good biscuits and sausage gravy. I really like their Huevos con Chiorizo and their Huevos Rancheros for $7.00 and $6.75 respectively. The El Tejado Omelet is a big hit at breakfast too. It is ham, onions, mushrooms, green peppers, and all smothered when some very good green chili, and smothered with cheese.
El Tejado has all the normal, burritos, enchiladas, tamales, tacos, chimichangas, flauta and the like and they are all top notch but I just like the real Mexican dishes better. Like I said earlier, I have never had a bad meal at El Tejado.
Where El Tejado rally shines is their Mexican Specialties and their great seafood. They have some really good soups. Their Caldo 7 Mares is a seafood soup that is excellent and they have very good Pasole. I especially like their shrimp fajitas. Probably my two very favorites are the whole grilled red snapper with Mexican spices and the grilled Rocky Mountain Trout. The taste of these fish is just out of this world and I almost always get one of the two. I also like their shrimp dishes. I really enjoy their ice cold oysters on the half-shell. Too bad that Obama and BP has screwed up a lot of our best seafood grounds. Oh yes, their liver and onions are pretty darned good too.
The normal combination platters are very good and my wife likes their chile rellenos. Their tamales are good and not too much massa. Like I said I have eaten their a lot of time and it has always been good. After a good meal have some of their homemade Flan for dessert.
Hopefully they at El Tejado will be around for many more years serving good authentic Mexican Food.
