There will always be age discrimination in the workplace because there will always be people who are insecure about themselves or jealous of a co-worker.
I used to work for a temp agency, I went to a store to do Food Demonstrations. I went into the store the lady that I reported to did not even know me but she judged me by my looks. The first thing she said to me was "Wow you wore decent shoes you young girls usually wear high heels and then complain because your feet hurt". Later on, after I worked there for a few months I told the lady my age and she said "Really" and, changed her opinion of me. Another woman who was an employee of the store had a problem with the young temp girls (Not guys) who came to work.
One time there was a girl who worked and she was in the break room and this woman harassed her because of her age. This woman who was an employee said to the temp worker "You know people are always against young people , but I don't have a problem with young people " and this woman just kept on harassing this temp because of her age. The temp girl could not believe what she was hearing. Another time there was another girl who came to work and she was sitting in the office waiting for a manager to sign her form so she could get paid. The same woman who harassed the first girl started harassing her about her age. This woman said "We have a lot of nice little workers coming in" and then the manager said I'm old enough to be your father". The girl said "Well yeah". She got her form signed and never came back.
Another time I was a waitress at a club. I was the youngest waitress working there. One time the manager wanted to treat me like the other employees who worked there and he wanted to have a beer with me. While I was sitting at the bar, the older waitresses started whispering to each other, the next time I came in there was a rumor going around about me that I was having an affair with my manager. One of the waitresses actually went to my managers wife and told her. My manager came up to me and said "I'm not going to give you any attention". From then on he totally ignored me.
It is a shame that people cannot accept other people for who they are. A person cannot control their age. A person cannot control the year they were born. I think some people need to grow up stop being so insecure about themselves so they can accept other people.
