Jensen Ames returns home from work with the news for his wife that they have all lots their jobs, she comforts him and tells him to go and wash up ready for tea. As Jensen is washing and his baby girl is sleeping in bed his wife gets murdered and he is also attacked. When he wakes up he finds the police surrounding him and he is instantly arrested and framed for her murder.
We move to 6 months later when Jensen is in a high security prison and being asked by the warden to take the place of Frankenstein in the Death Race which she runs. Jensen at first refuses but Warden Hennessey talks him around by telling him that as Frankenstein has already won 4 races he only needs to race and win one to secure his freedom and get his daughter back. Jensen reluctantly agrees and goes off to meet his team. His team is lead by Coach and he fills him in on the other racers and what to expect from this brutal race.
Jensen soon discovers that things are not all they seem when he meets his fellow racers and soon finds out the truth about his wife’s murder.
Will ‘Frankenstein’ be able to win his race and secure his freedom and will he ever be able to uncover the truth behind the murder? What will become of the other racers who are out to win and kill in the process?
I was not too sure what to expect from this film. When I read a brief summery of the plot I instantly thought of the film ‘Running Man’ as that is also based on a prisoner running and racing to secure his freedom but I have to say this film was nothing like it. The storyline was excellent and I did enjoy the few twists which it threw at me. I did find it was exceptional violent and brutal in places which really did shock me as I wasn’t expecting it at all.
Jason Stratham played the role of Jensen and I have to say he did an excellent job. Not only was he was easy on the eye he also managed to give the character a human side and show his emotions at times. I did enjoy seeing him working with the other actors and his co driver Elizabeth as they had a great chemistry. There were a lot of supporting actors in this film and the one which I particularly enjoyed was Ian McShane playing Coach. I have not seen him in anything like this film before and was surprised at how good a job he did. The other drivers in the race were a complete mixed bunch and I thought they all did bring a lot to the film and all had their own little backgrounds and stories and did manage to give the film a little
