Playing guitar is a very fun and rewarding activity, but most people experience a lack of motivation when starting out. Playing guitar is a difficult thing to do and takes years of hard work to master. However, the process of learning guitar and improving is half the fun of guitar playing. One bit of advice I would suggest is to play songs that you personally enjoy. Most teachers of the instrument would advise that you first learn the basics and move on to scales and naming chords. However, I feel that the best way to learn guitar is to jump right into playing songs. Once you get the basics down and have figured out how to play individual notes you can look at guitar tabs to learn songs.
Reading tabs is easy and a great way to start playing a song. You will actually learn new techniques and build your skills as you play new songs so I would actually advise against practicing scales and exercises as they seem to be boring, monotonous, and don’t offer the thrill of learning an actual song. Now as to playing the actual songs, I would suggest starting off with easy simple songs that you enjoy listening to and work from there. The best way to learn how to play a song is to listen to the song while you are playing to try to match the tempo. It can also be fun to make up your own songs by just messing around and seeing what sounds good.
Here is a list of some easy songs that with a bit of practice you can learn to play. Once you have mastered the simple songs you will slowly improve as you learn new songs without even realizing it. So here are easy songs to get you started; these are songs I learned to play within my first year of picking up the instrument. You can find tabs at ultimateguitar.com.
