Nim and her father Jack have sailed around the world twice and made a discovery which saw them setting up home on an undiscovered island. Nim has no mother as she was taken by a great white whale when Nim was a baby and so father Jack is always searching for the whale to be close to her Mom. Jack works as a scientist and is always on the lookout for new marine animals. As a result of his work he goes off for 2 nights leaving Nim on the Island with her nest friends, Silkie the seal and iguana Fred. Nim is not bother by being left on her own as she has her books for company, her favourite being the stories about adventurer Alex Rover.

As Nim’s father leaves Nim gets an email from the Alex Rover who needs help with details of the volcano which is on their island. Nim is thrilled with this email and sets off to find the info Alex needs. Unbeknown to Nim, Alex Rover is really Alexandra who is too scared to even leave her house. As Nim continues to help Alex a big storm hit the sea and their island which sees Nim’s Dad get into trouble on his boat and lose contact with Nim. Nim calls upon adventurer Alex Rove to help find her Dad but will Alex be able to even leave her house let alone find this secluded and remote island? Will Nim ever get her Dad back?

I am quite a fan of children’s adventure films as they are usually very good and fun to watch but I have to say that I was very let down by this one. I found the whole storyline and idea was good but it was so unrealistic. Abigail Breslin played the role of Nim and I thought that she did do a fairly good job for a girl of her age but at times she seemed so wooden. I think the best acting she did was with the animals she looked after and loved. I liked the way they interacted and saw that their was a genuine affection for all of them. I found the acting that she did with her father and Alex was hard to watch as there seemed to be no chemistry at all.

The best character in the film for me was Alex Rover who was played by Jodie Foster. This is the first time I have ever really seen her in a light hearted role and I thought she played it very well. I loved the humour which she bought to the film and how she was verging on being crazy. She did work well with Gerard Butler who played the role of her character Alex Rover and they did actually bring a lot to the film. Gerard Butler also played the role of Nim’s Father Jack but he was not in it very much but I did like the small parts which he did do.
