Every one of us dreamed about how our lives will look like when we grow up. But, let’s be honest, how many of us really live the life of their dreams now? I am sure that very few would answer positively. Apart from your dream life, how many of your dreams came true? Well, most people would answer that none or a very few of their dreams became a reality. Why is it that our secret wishes are fulfilled so rarely?
Most people would answer that life always puts obstacles in their way. Obstacles that are either too hard or even impossible to overcome. However, is this really true? I would say that it is not. I do not say that there are no life’s obstacles in way of our dreams. What I am saying is that these obstacles are not the main reason why our dreams usually stay just in our heads.
In my opinion, barriers between the dream and the reality can be divided into two basic types. Obstacles put in our way by life, or as it might be better to say by nature and other people, form the first type. These are usually very hard or even impossible to influence. However, they are rarely impossible to overcome. And this brings me to the second type which consists of obstacles made by ourselves.
This might sound strange. It is our dream we are trying to achieve. So, why would we sabotage the process of fulfilling this dream? Well, the answer is really easy. Many people are pessimists in their nature. Even if they are not, they might think that certain dream is unachievable. Being in this state of the mind is probably the biggest obstacle that will always prevent your dream from being realized. Pessimistic thoughts decrease the motivation and without proper motivation, we do not put in enough effort. If we do not work hard enough, we will never get anything done.
The lack of will to achieve a certain dream is sometimes caused by the fact that it is not our dream at all. Parents often force their own dreams upon their children. Some widely spread wishes are often adopted by people, too. They then consider them their own dreams. However, they do this only because of the lack of imagination or inability to decide what they really want. It is then understandable that they are unable to fulfill these wishes as they lack the real motivation to do so.
To conclude, there are two basic types of life’s obstacles that can get in the way of fulfilling your dreams. The most apparent and diverse group is one that consists of obstacles caused by nature and other people. However, these barriers are rarely the real cause of inability to fulfill our goals. It is the second type that is the real cause. It consists of what our own minds put in the way. Our minds are indeed the best weapons in battling life’s obstacles, weapons that can also be turned against us. Sad as it is, pessimistic thoughts and lack of motivation make us the worst enemy of our dreams.
