Short stories: My crazy aunt

by Masimba Mukichi

Created on: June 14, 2010

After finishing her secondary education, Joyce went to live with her aunt , Jacqueline in a posh suburb in Harare known as Borrow dale Brooks.Jacqueline had been married to her husband for five years and they had no children. Despite having everything that money can buy. Jacqueline had no inner peace, She was always quarrelling with her husband due to the fact that the husband wanted a child but Jacqueline could not conceive.

They tried to sought help from doctors and traditional healers but all was in vain. They tried to adopt but Jacqueline and her husband were vetted unsuitable to adopt. This worsened their already fragile relationship. Jacqueline hatched a plan, she invited Joyce, the daughter of her older brother to come and live with them under the pretext of enrolling her at a computer college in the inner city. In reality Jacqueline had arranged with her husband to force Jacqueline into an arranged affair so that in the end she might have children with her aunt's husband.

Joyce thought it was a good gesture from her aunt to invite her to come and live with them. She packed her bags and went to live with her aunt in this posh, paradise on earth suburb. They enrolled Joyce for a computer course in the inner city college. In the beginning things were smooth sailing. One Friday night ,Jacqueline summoned Joyce to the sitting room for a briefing.

" I have called you, Joyce so that we may have a chat." said Jacqueline turning off the radio.

"It's fine aunt, Jacquie, what do you want to tell me? is it about  my course?"

"I want you to listen attentively as I split the yam. You can only ask questions or say your views when I finish talking. I don't want any interruption. The reason why I have called you here is that, as you may  know I  have been married to my husband for ten years. Everything is smoothing sailing except one burning issue which is a cause of concern for me. I can't have children. I was wondering whether you can take my place and bed my husband so that he may have children. I don't want him to die childless. I see no harm in you doing this, since you are my brother's daughter. Culture dictates that you may have my husband as yours as well , there is no problem in doing so we are of the same lineage. You are the daughter of my brother. Traditionally it is also possible for you to be married by my husband and have children for him. Your children are also my children. We can stay together harmoniously."
