CPR can save your cats life especially if you find your cat without breathing and pulse. If your cat is unconscious the main thing to do is keep your cool and follow some basic steps taught in CPR. Knowing CPR can save your cats life and is well worth the time and effort to learn it. Here is how to perform CPR for cats.
Check breathing and pulse
The first thing you should do when you find your cat unconscious is to check and see if he is breathing. This can be done by placing the back of your hand close to his nose and mouth. If there is any breath at all you should be able to feel it. Next check and see if your cat has a pulse.
You can find a cats pulse right under the dew claw of his paws. This applies to all paws whether they are front or back legs. You can also find the pulse behind the front paw elbow when it is brought back to meet the chest. The point of contact is where you will find the pulse. Whether you find the pulse or not you should continue with the CPR.
Check for blockages
Open your cat’s mouth and pull his tongue to one side. Look for any foreign object that may be blocking his airway. If you can see the object and it can be easily reached remove it. If the object is further back in the throat it is best not try to remove it you may drive the object further down his throat.
In cases of objects that cannot be removed you can perform the Heimlich. This may remove any object that is lodged in his airways. If you happen to get rid of the foreign object you still need to see your veterinarian to make sure no other damage has been done.
Administering CPR
If there is no objects to be seen take your cat and lay him on a flat surface on his right side. By placing him on his right side you are reducing the strain on his heart. The heart is also available for heart compressions. Close your cats mouth and cup your hands around is face. Breathe into his nose by cupping the mouth and nose in your hands gently.
Watch as the chest rises when you do. Let the air come back out naturally and repeat the breathing method. If there is no response you can add cardiac massage and still keep the breathing rhythm going. Try to get your cat to your veterinarian immediately whether he becomes conscious or not.
Heart compressions
To give your cat heart compressions bring his forepaw towards his chest. The point of contact of a cats elbow is the place where his heart is located. You will do fifteen compressions in ten seconds then give another breath. You can also squeeze the stomach at the place where the hind paw joins. Lift up on your cat in this area and squeeze. This will help send the blood back to your cat’s heart.
When you find your cat unconscious it can be very frightening but you have to remain calm as your cats life depends on it. Repeat CPR until you can seek medical help. It may make the difference in your cat’s life. Once you know how to perform CPR on cats it will give you the confidence that you can save your cats life if it becomes necessary.
