If you like the beautiful outdoor, water sports, fishing, hunting, friendly helpful people and plenty of good food, you need to take a vacation down to Greers Ferry Lake, the Little Red River, and Heber Springs Arkansas area. It is very easy to spend a couple weeks there and I could very happily spend the rest of my life there. It is located in Cleburne and Van Buren Counties in North Central Arkansas. Arkansas is called "The Natural State" and after you have spent some time on the many beautiful rivers and lakes in Arkansas, you will se how well the name fits. To me the phrase "God's Country" definitely fits this beautiful area of the United States of America. Heber Springs is the largest town in the area and is around 7,500 people. Heber Springs has one of the best Cajun restaurants out of Cajun Country It is called the Cravin' Cajun Cafe and is really good.
Greers Ferry Lake is actually two lakes connected by a water filled gorge called the Narrows between the two lakes. Between the two lakes and the narrows, you have 40.500 acres of cold clear blue water to enjoy. You have over 340 miles of shoreline to roam and enjoy. At its deepest point, Greers Ferry Lake is over 300 feet deep. The lake was formed by Greers Ferry dam that was completed in 1964 at a cost of $46,500,000. Can you even dare to goes what it would cost in this time of Obamanomics. Scary!
My old Navy Buddy that lives in Heber Springs has a 24' boat that we have fished from for many enjoyable hours on Greers Ferry Lake. we won't mention all the beer we have gone through but we will mention some of the great fish fries we have had after a day on Greers Ferry Lake. There is nothing better than a good fresh walleye cooked on the grill and some crappie dressed and deep fried with some hush puppies and a good cole slaw or a good potato salad. If I could get grandma to leave the grandkids, grandpa would be living there too. Let the grandkids come down and spend some time every couple months.
Greers Ferry Lake area is a favorite tourist attraction and there are many marinas and all kinds of recreational opportunities including boating, water skiing, jet skiing, swimming, scuba diving, fishing and hiking the many paths along the miles of shore line. The water is clear and cold and oh so refreshing on a hot day.
