Angelique tulips may well be the most delicate or romantic looking tulips of the hundreds of types of tulips in existence today.  They make a beautiful, delicate addition to any spring garden and are perfect for gardeners who want to fill their flower garden beds with long lasting spring blooms but don’t like the appearance of traditional style tulips. Very feminine in appearance Angelique tulips are also known as peony tulips because they closely resemble peonies or fully open rose blooms.  Angelique tulip’s double blooms may range from pink to pale pink to almost pure white.

Tulips are native to different countries around the world.  In the 1500s, botanists from Holland took a great interest in bringing different flower species from all over the world to their native country and perfecting the species. The Netherlands is still world recognized for producing the highest quality flower bulbs in the world.  Botanists in the Holland region of the Netherlands specifically perfected the tulip.  The Angelique tulip hadn’t yet been created when botanists first started perfecting the tulip however today’s Angelique bulbs are still related to those first bulbs from hundreds of years ago.  There continues to be new hybrid varieties of tulips introduced to the market each year and future tulip hybrids will more likely have the unusual appearance of Angelique tulips as botanists become more and more creative.

• Planting

Angelique tulip bulbs should be planted in late fall along with most other tulips bulbs six to nine inches apart, four to six inches deep.  Angelique tulips may start breaking through the soil in early spring but won’t be in full bloom until mid to late spring. Angelique tulips bloom May through June.  Angelique tulips will reach a full height of 16-18 inches.  They make beautiful long lasting cut flowers and have a light, pleasant fragrance.

• Continuing Care

Angelique tulips will romanticize North American gardens in USDA zones 3a-7b.  They require full sun and average watering.  Angelique tulips don’t like to be overwatered.  Overwatering will rot bulbs.   Angelique tulips may grow in any type soil including sandy soil.  Once blooms appear in spring gardeners should feed Angelique tulips a generous feeding of potash and dead head blooms as soon as they are spent.

Angelique tulips are easy to find and are readily available at neighborhood nurseries.  Angelique tulips are also available to purchase on line as well.   Gardeners who think that they may interesting in trying to grow Angelique tulips may find many pictures of Angelique tulips on the internet so as they may get a feel as to whether or not these beautiful bulbs will add the right look to a romantic garden bed.
