Writing professional web content

by Elizabeth A. Marion

Created on: June 11, 2010

Just because you write web content regularly does not mean that you or your work is professional. Your work and your online presence needs to meet certain standards in order to be considered professional web content. Here are some ways to make sure that your work is professional.

-Using Proper Grammar

It is incredible how many people will forget this step, even when they want to be taken seriously as a professional. Poor grammar makes someone who advertises themselves as a writer look extremely unprofessional and look like they do not take their work seriously. Do not forget to use proper spelling and grammar. Reread your articles before you submit them, just to make sure you didn't miss any major errors. Many errors can go unnoticed the first time around. Know that your article contains proper spelling and grammar before you post it.

-Writing for your Audience

Have an understanding of the audience you are writing for. If you are writing complicated how to articles make them easy to understand and don't use jargon unless you define it in your article. If your writing is focused on a very specific topic then stay focused on that topic. Know who your audience is and what audience you are trying to reach. Know what they expect from you and what needs you are trying to meet. Be able to review your work critically to see if your writing is not meeting those needs.

-Writing for Yourself

Choose those writing projects that are important to you. When work is slow, sometimes you have to take on a project that you don't have very much interest in, but avoid this as often as possible. Write about what you know and what you are passionate about. When you really know the subject you are writing about that will come through to the reader, which will give you more credibility with them.

-Maintaining a Professional Web Presence

Be professional in how you interact with your readers. People will leave comments that are rude or insulting, but think about how it will make you look before replying with a nasty comment of your own. Be professional enough to handle those criticisms and those rude comments. How you interact with other people on the web says a lot about you, not just your writing. Handle your comments as professionally as you handle your writing because those comments do reflect on you.
