Largactil is an old antipsychotic medication, dating to the 1950s, which has since been supplemented by newer antipsychotic medications but may still be useful. Its effects on the central nervous system can be quite varied, although it is targeted at relieving anxiety and treating a variety of mental conditions. It was the rise of such medications which finally persuaded the psychiatric establishment to reduce its dependence on electroconvulsive (shock) therapy. However, it can also be useful in reducing nausea and vomiting, for palliative care purposes. (Note that relieving such symptoms does not necessarily address the condition or cause of those symptoms; Largactil relieves symptoms, but is not a cure.)
Note that Largactil is actually the contemporary European marketing name for a now-generic medical compound, chlorpromazine. The same drug has also been marketed in North America as thorazine.
There is a wide range of potential side effects of Largactil. Several of these are relatively common and minor. These mild side effects of Largactil include drowsiness, a blank expression, nervousness or increased agitation, shuffling while walking, difficulty sleeping, weight gain, sexual dysfunction (and, in women, a disrupted menstrual cycle), dry mouth, stuffy nose, and trouble urinating. If these symptoms feel particularly serious or are persistent, you should contact your doctor to discuss the situation. Because drowsiness is a potential side effect of Largactil, it is important not to drive or operate heavy machinery if you may be affected by the medication.
In addition, however, there are some side effects of Largactil which may indicate more serious reactions to the drug. You should contact your doctor promptly if you develop a fever, experience stiff muscles, feel confused, have a fast heartbeat (tachycardia), lost or altered vision, become jaundiced (the skin or eyes turn yellow), neck cramps, a lolling tongue, or feel like you are developing a flu. Some serious side effects of Largasil may also include uncontrollable muscle movements or even seizures, or classic symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as blisters, a skin rash, and hives. In addition, if you begin to feel difficulty breathing, you should seek immediate medical attention. In all cases of serious side effects of Largasil, medical attention is necessary to determine whether your treatment needs to be adjusted or discontinued to protect your health.
The information here has been gathered from publicly available sources as a general guide. However, it is vital to discuss all prescription medications with your doctor and your pharmacist, who can give you qualified and professional medical advice, and to follow their instructions specifically.
