Over the years I have taken many vacations with my family as a child and teen, by myself as a young adult, and with my own children. I enjoy traveling and seeing different places all across our country, but I also enjoy returning to my favorite places.
Some of the first vacations I took as a child were to Florida. My grandparents had a place in a mobile home park so we went down there for spring break several years in a row. We visited Disney World when it was just the Magic Kingdom and Sea World where I first fell in love with dolphins. I came home with a stuffed dolphin I named Sandy after one of the dolphins we had seen in the show. I actually still have that dolphin after all these years.
In the summer of 1982, our trip to Wyoming was full of history, something I enjoy. We not only went to visit my grandpa who lives in northeast Wyoming, but on the way out there, we stopped at the famous Wall Drugstore and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. That landmark is a sight to see and something everyone should see at least once in their lifetime. Once we arrived at my grandpa’s house in Wyoming, he took us into Montana one day and showed us Custer Battlefield, now called Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. My grandpa wanted to show us not only a historical site but where he would be buried whenever he died. (He died in Sept. 2007.) It was eerie standing on the same land where General George A. Custer and 260 men were massacred by thousands of Native Americans. At the same time I learned about an important part of our history.
Several years later in 1987 when I was senior in high school, my English teacher chaperoned 26 junior and senior students to England over spring break. That trip was my first time on an airplane and my first time traveling without my parents. While I wasn’t too sure about the airplane trip, I had an awesome time. We saw so much in those nine days, like St. Paul’s Cathedral where the royalty married and then later had the funeral for Princess Diana, Stonehenge and the hot springs at Bath. I have so many pictures to remember my trip.
When I was in college, my former high school band director asked me to help with marching band, and I excitedly accepted. The second year I was on staff the band went to Disney World over spring break. I had so much fun hanging out with the other staff members. We spent a few days in Disney World where the band marched in the parade in the afternoon. I wish I could have gone to Disney World
