Kainan is from another place and time but he and his spaceship crash lands on Earth in the time of the Vikings. Unfortunately he is not alone and there is a monster aboard his ship which has killed his friend. The monster escapes and is soon wreaking havoc among the Vikings.

Kainan is captured by one Viking village and King Rothgar believes he is the person responsible for destroying their enemies town. Kainan explains that it was not him but a Moorwen who he bought from his ship. Kainan and the Vikings have to now work together to bring down the Moorwen before t can destroy and kill any more people. Will they be able to work as a team to bring it down or will the Moorwen win and destroy all of mankind?

I have only given a very brief plot summery for this film but there is much more to the story but I feel that by telling you anymore then I will be spoiling it for those who have not yet seen this film.

I was very reluctant to see this film, because it did not appeal to me when hubby suggested it. However, I have to say I did actually enjoy it and found the storyline to be good and interesting, despite being nothing very new. It did slightly remind both me and hubby of the Predator films with the way the Moorwen monster was never fully seen until the second half of the film and he was really left to the imagination with only parts of the body or face being shown. I did enjoy this as it had me wanted to continue watching to find out what type of creature he was.

The acting throughout the film was very good and the lead role of Kainan was played by Huston and Ron Perlman, each of them gave good performances and made their characters their own which did bring some diversity and depth to the storyline. For me the stand out performance did actually come from John Hurt, who played the role of King Rothgar. He was not a very central character in the film but when he was on screen he managed to steal the scenes from all involved.

There are a lot of special effects in this film and they were all very good. The Moorwen was completely computer generated but he seemed to fit well and looked very good against the backdrops and the other actors, he was detailed and moved well which did make it very believable and real. We also got a lot of action in this film and the weapons and fighting skills were all very good and all of the actors did a great job working with the effects and weaponry. The film was based in 709AD with the Vikings and the town in which they lived and all of the costumes looked great and very authentic for this era. I loved how the old and new which Kainan brought worked and fitted well together. I enjoyed seeing the basic way of life for the Vikings and think this was shown in a great way throughout the film. The music was also very good and helped with the tensions and dramas for the scenes in which it was used.

As this is a film only review, there are no bonus features to speak of. The running time of the film is 115 minutes and I did find this was a great length with the storyline moving at a good steady pace from start to finish. The rating is a 15 and I do definitely agree with this as there is a lot of violence in the film and it is not suitable for children to be watching. The DVD can be bought for around the £5 price on several internet sites.

Overall, I am giving this a 4 star rating because I was very surprised by it, the storyline was good although nothing new and the acting and special effects really were great. There is something for both the male and female audience in this film, so I would say to give it a go.
