The story starts with Landon telling us about where he lives in North Carolina and about his parents. He is a normal 17 year old boy who likes to keep in with his friends and be popular. This though was about to change when he started drama classes at school., He only took them as he though it would be an easy subject to pass and not much work involved. In these lessons he got to know
Landon and Jamie get to know each other when he asks her to the school dance as he has no one else to go with and does not want to go alone.
Jamie and Landon realise that they did actually enjoy spending time together and soon they are doing other things which Landon would not normally dream of doing, like helping out at the orphanage and giving up his free time to act in the Christmas play. The two problems which Landon has is that Jamie’s father does not like him and his school friends who tease him for spending time with Jamie. Can Landon overcome this to help Jamie who is always helping others and what will come of their friendship?
I loved how the storyline involved teenagers and not adults as it made it so much more touching. The way the story was told made it so easy to get to know the two main character. Landon gave us a lot of details about his life and where he lived and for me this helped to visualise the places he visited and his family members and home. I found the descriptions we had of Jamie made me able to make a good mental picture of her which helped when reading the book. We did get a few different places in the book and they were all easy to understand and visualise also as we were told all about them and the way they looked and I found I could easily get a feel for them and make a mental picture of the characters in them which did make the reading a more enjoyable experience. The year for this book was the 1950’s and although we did not have any pictures I was still able to get a good feel for the year from the things which were talked about and what the characters did.
I will confess now that I did cry at the end of the book as the story was very moving but throughout, right from the start I was feeling so many emotions and at times I would want to giggle and at other times my heart would break for the characters as they told of something sad in their life. I think the way this book has been written makes it very easy for these emotions to flow and not have to be forced.
One problem which I had with this book was that I could not put it
