TV show reviews: Friends

by Daniella Antelo

Created on: June 10, 2010

2004 was a hard year for many television lovers.  After ten years of bringing tears to our eyes from endless hours of laughter, Warner Bros. Studio shut its door on its best personality; Friends.

Friends, is a show in which anybody can relate to.  Its cast consisted of Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer.  It was full of great one-liners, guest stars, episode and seasonal plots, iconic hairstyles and good fashion.  I personally have actually grown up watching friends, from the very first aired episode.  Yes, they were about 10 years older than I was at the time, but still, I wasn't ready to say good-bye.

The characters on this show have been so well defined and have evolved greatly over their ten years on the air.  The dialogue is inventive and smart and honest.  The show stays true to how people/friends live and interact with one another in everyday life.  The only thing I would pause a little on is the constant coming in and out of each other’s houses.  I mean, nobody knocks.  I think the only time people knocked were when they went to Phoebe’s house or Ross’s.  Another thing, why is the door always unlocked?  It’s New York for Pete’s sake!  In my town, you can’t even leave your car unlocked at a 7-Eleven when you go in for a pack of cigarettes—it’ll get stolen.  (I don’t live in the hood; I just don’t live in a very trusting city.)

I appreciated how candid the writers were about relationships, sex, smoking and real life scenarios.  They didn’t sugar coat anything.  Just because the show was a comedy, not everything had to be funny all the time.  Serious material in many of the episodes, with a hint of comedic commentary or action, made for good television.

Ross and Rachel’s break up on The Morning After episode was intense and real.  It kept you drawn to the screen, with emotions on the surface at all times.  Ross is trying to keep Rachel from finding out about the copy girl by going on a scavenger hunt for all the people in “the trail.” Ross accidentally running into Rachel in the coffee house after Gunther informs her of what happened left a tiny cliff hanger for the next big scene.  Ross follows Rachel back to the apartment and the break up begins.

Meanwhile, the other four are trapped in Monica’s
